We Are the "UNITED" States of America

November 3, 2026 | An Election Night Reflection

Election Day reminds us of the extraordinary privilege Americans share: the right to help shape the future of our communities, our state, and our country. We may disagree about policies or candidates, but our democracy belongs to every one of us.

As a Tampa native and Florida REALTOR®, I care deeply about the places we call home and the neighbors who make them special. Tonight, Florida's election results give us an opportunity to reflect on leadership, homeownership, and the responsibilities we share.

Byron Donalds won Florida's gubernatorial election, defeating David Jolly, and will succeed Governor Ron DeSantis. His election marks a historic first for Florida. U.S. Senator Ashley Moody also won her election against Angie Nixon. These are reported election-night outcomes, pending official certification.

As they undertake the work ahead, may every elected official remember that public service is a responsibility to all constituents, including those who voted differently.

Amendment 3 and Florida Homeownership

Florida voters also approved Amendment 3, a significant change to property taxation. Florida Realtors, under 2026 President Chuck Bonfiglio Jr., advocated for the measure and welcomed its passage on Election Night.

For qualifying established Florida homestead owners, the exemption from non-school property taxes rises to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, with inflation adjustments beginning in 2029. Different phase-in provisions apply to newer Florida residents. The amendment also lowers the annual assessment increase cap for non-homestead properties from 10 percent to 5 percent.

These changes can affect homeowners, investors and communities differently. Potential tax relief must be considered alongside the funding needs of local governments and essential services. Homeowners should consult their county property appraiser and tax professionals regarding their individual circumstances.

As a Florida Realtors Director, I appreciate the association's efforts to inform voters about the proposal and the importance of keeping homeownership within reach.

The Word That Matters Most: "UNITED"

Now that ballots have been cast, I hope we will remember something larger than the outcome of any one contest.

We are neighbors before we are political opponents. We are Americans before we are Republicans, Democrats, or independents. Respectful disagreement is part of our national tradition, but it need not diminish our shared commitment to our country.

We are not merely the States of America. We are the "UNITED" States of America.

United in our care for family. United in our hopes for opportunity. United in our responsibility to leave our communities stronger for the generations that follow.

May we choose civility, demand accountability, and look for common ground even when our convictions differ.

One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Thank you for willingly wasting a little of your time with me. I hope you found something here worth carrying with you. And when the time comes to make a move in real estate, I hope you will reach out. I would be delighted to help you find your place.

Warmly,
